Ingredients
- 450g firm tofu
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tap pepper
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 egg
- 8 tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp canola oil
- 2 garlic cloves
- 1 spring onion (finely sliced on the diagonal)
- 4 tbsp soy sauce
- 4 tbsp mirin
- 4 tbsp cooking sake
- 4 tbsp water
Method
- Cut tofu into 4 ‘steaks’, pat dry with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt and pepper
- In separate bowls, place flour, egg (beat slightly) and sesame seeds
- Press tofu into flour on all sides and shake off excess. Dip in egg and let excess drip off. Then coat in sesame seeds on all sides.
- Heat oil in non stick pan. Slice garlic into very thin slices and fry in the oil until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towel.
- Turn heat to medium high and cook all 4 tofu steaks. Cook for 1 1/2 mins each side until crisp. Use tongs to flip tofu steaks to get the long and short sides too.
- Remove tofu and drain on paper towel
- Reduce heat and add the mirin, sake, soy sauce and water to make the teriyaki sauce. Simmer for a couple of minutes until syrupy
- Serve tofu steaks on jasmine rice, garnish with the golden garlic slices and spring onion, pour over teriyaki sauce.
