It’s the final day of adventures in Shanghai, so we’re all a bit sad the trip is ending, but still super excited to spend one more day in this hustling and bustling city in China.
Our first stop is Shanghai Tramy, the biggest tofu factory in all of China. We’re lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the factory and seeing how it creates this wonderful soybean product at the huge commercial scale. The tour begins with a look at the scale model of this factory. Let’s just say that it’s massive and leave it at that. Next up, the tour guides show us through a museum showing the history of tofu making, and how people would make this product back in the days without fancy machinery.
We also get a quick look at the labs where the company makes sure their tofu is of top-notch quality. Then we are shown the factory where all the magic happens. There are so many massive machines pumping out container after container of tofu. It’s an incredible sight to see.
Our next adventure is in Tianzifang, a labyrinthian maze of alleyways that are home to craft shops, boutiques, design studios, art galleries, bars, cafés, and so much more. It’s a beautiful area with all sorts of little treasures and knickknacks. A total Shanghai hipster paradise.
After walking around the lanes of Tianzifang, we’re knackered. It’s time for another feed! At this moment, nothing sounds better than some hotpot. We drop into a hotpot place just off of Nanjing Road, and do the classic yin yang of spicy Mala Sichuan style soup paired with a milder broth. We get feasting away on all the delicious bits and pieces, dunking a bit of everything in the soup for a taste test.
When dinner is done, we need to go for a walk to make ourselves feel a bit better about the mass amounts of food we just ate. We take a stroll down Nanjing Road, a busy shopping strip in Shanghai, before making our way to The Bund. The famous Shanghai waterfront is beautiful at night with all the bank buildings lit up, as well as the colourful lights of the incredible Shanghai skyline at Pudong across the river. What a sight for our last night in Shanghai.
